British Cycling National Youth & Junior Track Championships 2017

August 8, 2017

More success for the Carmarthen Cycling Club's riders at the above National Championships held at Newport Velodrome between Monday 31st of July and Friday 4th of August.

Coupled with this track success for our young ladies was the fantastic efforts of Eluned King of Towy Riders in an International multi-day road race in Holland.

Things got off to a fantastic start on day one of the National Track Championships with Ella Barnwell of TRCC clinching a bronze medal in the Youth Women's sprint. Ella had just returned from the Youth Olympics in Hungary where she represented GB and was straight back  into an 11 hour qualifying shift at the event being, in her own words dead tired and dead legs, having to fend off Towy Riders Emma Finucane in the qualifying rounds.

There was further success on day three of the event where Towy Riders young ladies shone in the Under 16's Scratch Race. Amy Cole clinched 3rd place and the bronze medal - again having to fend off fellow Club members in the process.

Day four, Thursday, brought double podium success for TRCC in the Women's Youth 500m Time Trial. Ella Barnwell struck gold and won the coveted National Champion's banded jersey, achieving a personal best time at the discipline to boot. With Emma Finucane securing a step on the podium by picking up the bronze medal too at the same event it was a memorable day for the local cycling clubs.

On the final day of competition Barnwell clinched second place in the 2km pursuit adding silver to her week's collection of medals and completing the colour set.

Away from the track and in the Jeugdtour Assen, the European Junior Cycling Tour of Assen, Holland, Towy Riders Eluned King powered her way through the wind and over the tough cobbled roads to reach the podium in third place overall. The 35km circuitous route took place early Friday morning where the field of under 17 women competed on day 5 of the six day event.
