As summer draws to a close the Towy riders youth cycling club start their season of cyclo-cross racing in the Welsh Cyclo Cross league. With 12 rounds taking place across Wales, the league is proving to be one of the most popular periods in the cycling calendar. The first round took place last weekend at Llanishen in Cardiff with a total of 300 cyclists racing during the day. Up first were the under 8’s, with a twisting course that proved a real challenge. Ilan Dafydd flew round to get 2nd U8 boy.
Rory Gravelle came fantastic 3rd in the U10 boys, having just moved up from the U8s’. Amy Greatrick flew round to get a fantastic 3rd place in the girls race.
The U12’s raced a different and challenging course with riders going from the gun. Iolo Dafydd fought back from a dropped chain to get a 3rd boy on the line. Bethany Bennett rode an aggressive race to get a brilliant 2nd. The U14’s and U16’s had to contend with the seniors course, including having to navigate a sand trap. The racing was fast and furious with the lead changing hand every lap. The Towies took a clean sweep in the U14’s with Guto Dafydd giving the U16’s a run for their money and taking 1st,
Bryn Davies 2nd and Cian Roberts 3rd in the boys race and Eluned King 1st, Emma Finucane 2nd and Amy Cole 3rd in the girls race. The results in the U16’s came down to the final corners, with Owain Roberts timing his move perfectly to sprint clear and take the U16’s boys win.
Well done to all the Towy Riders and good luck for the season. Next weekend will see the Towies race in the Welsh Circuit Race championships in Porthcawl.
